Community Design Project

Project Mission:

  • Introduce LatinX Design Crew as a Network of Nike Latin Creatives committed to helping the youth through volunteering opportunities

  • Inspire the next generation of Latinx designers in Beaverton (and beyond)

  • Disrupt stereotypes and show Latino/x creative careers representation

  • Design and produce quality merch to be used for club fundraisers

Meeting Details

  • Session 1: Designer Panel & Team Introductions

    • Thursday, March 23rd, 1:00-2:30 at Beaverton High

    • Introduction of Nike panel, their job/responsibilities/projects, and their interests in high school

    • Presentation topics: cultural significance/experience of pursuing a creative field, overcoming stereotypes in education/career, steps towards pursuing such a career, collaboration, and teamwork

    • Break into small groups (two designers and five students) and introduce the design process, this project, and the first steps

  • Session 2: Collaborative Design

    • Monday, April 10th (1-2:30pm) @ Beaverton High, MD33

    • Development from brainstorming/concepts to mock-ups and prototypes

    • Refinement of ideas, the collaborative decision on the direction of the project

    • Timeline and next steps solidified

  • Session 3: Finalization

    • Tuesday, April 18th (1-2:30pm) @ Beaverton High

    • Refinement of ideas

    • Potentially present to the group

Project Briefs

  • BHS MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán): student-organized Latino Leadership group at Beaverton High. See the example on the right

    Goal:

    • Create a shirt/hoody for students

    • Perhaps a different one for allies as a fundraiser

    Specifications:

    • Limit to simple designs, 3 colors

    • Will print on front/back of shirts/hoodies

    • Due date: Latino Leadership Conference

  • Multicultural Soccer Program is an afterschool soccer program that is predominantly Latino, but does include players from many cultures

    Goal:

    • Create a secondary shirt that can be used as a practice jersey, alternate game shirt, or fundraiser t-shirt

    Specifications:

    • Limit to simple designs, 3 colors

    • Will print on the front/back of dry-fit shirts or long-sleeve shirts

    • Due date: end of April

  • AVID: Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a 6-12t grade program to prepare students for success by developing skills that support students to be ready for college or career programs.

    Goal:

    • Create a design for shirts/hoodies for students and teachers of the AVID club

    Specifications:

    • Limit to simple designs, 3 colors

    • Will print on front/back of shirts/hoodies

    • Due date: end of April

  • The Lifestyle brand is a bit more open-ended, but the idea is to come up with shirts that represent the modern Latino culture.

    Goal:

    • Create a design for shirts/hoodies for students

    Specifications:

    • Limit to simple designs, 3 colors

    • Will print on the front/back of shirts/hoodies

    • Due date: end of April

    cARTEl curations was a Latino-Student brand started before COVID that featured cool designs (see Posada print example on the right)

  • The Timbers and Thorns are our local teams, but there doesn’t exist a lot of Nike designs, or a lot of Latino / Spanish influenced designs. This group needs to be very careful on copyright issues

    Goal:

    • Create a design for shirts/hoodies to be sold as a fundraiser on No Pity Originals

    Specifications:

    • Can be printed on Nike Crew Shirts

    • Limit to simple designs, 3 colors

    • Will print on the front/back of shirts/hoodies

    • Due date: end of April

The designs for each project will look different, but the goal and the general process will likely be the same:

Goal: Create a design that represents your club that can be screen printed and sold as a fundraiser

Process: Narrative, Ideation, Color, Artwork, Placements

MEChA
  • Arriving at Beaverton High

    • Beaverton High is located at 13000 SW 2nd St, Beaverton, OR 97005

    • Parking is pretty limited, but there are a few lots around (I recommend carpooling)

    • I (Tymon Emch) will meet you in that main entrance area between 12:45pm-1pm

    • We will go to the Merle Davies Lecture Hall at 1pm for the large group presentation

    • Students come at 1:10-1:20

    • We will break into small groups and meet in MD33 (just down the hall)

For Nike Designers:

  • First Small-Group Meeting Recommendations

    • Introductions and create a group email, reiterate the importance of checking email

    • Talk about the design process that you use at Nike

    • Review Project Briefs (drop-down menu above), including timeline

    • Talk about goals before the next meeting (4/10)
